IVC and UCI guitar ensemble
Musicians skilled in the art of playing the guitar gathered last Friday to host a concert sporting the music of the late 1700s to 1800s. Irvine Valley College and University of California, Irvine teamed up to perform “Guitar Ensembles: together in concert,” directed by John Schneiderman.
The IVC and UCI guitar ensemble enlightened the audience with pieces from “The Golden Age of the Guitar.” The contemporary selection of greats in the concert featured the music of Giuliani, Carulli, Gragnani and Von Call.
The almost sold-out concert delighted the crowd with the selection of music. People of all ages witnessed the revival of music and rounds of applause were given at the end of each musical piece.
There were two parts to this concert. One part was a show given by all the musicians and the talented director himself also contributed to the concert. The other half was made up of three solo performances given by Anson Brown, Jonathan Gerrard and Lana Hur. They featured the music of Giulani, Fernando Sor and Johann Kaspar Mertz.
Throughout the performances of these solo musicians, mistakes were subtle but evident.
It did not take away from the performance as a whole, but were noticeable enough to see.
The recovery from these mistakes also ranged from being obvious to barely noticeable.
Overall, the talent and skill that these solo guitarists displayed outshone the minor faults.
The beautiful play and flow of the individual pieces were nothing short of amazing.
