The tell-tale 10-8 victory over visiting Southwestern College on Sept. 8 was an early season display of the mighty scoring machine Saddleback looks to be throughout the rest of the season.

Game stand-out Jessica Allen took 13 shots, five of them for scores against the Jaguars.

“We’ve got really strong shooters and a lot of knowledge on this team,” said Gauchos head coach Jennifer Higginson. “I’m really excited about this group.”

Solid passing and opportunistic shooting demonstrated that this young team is a competitor early in the season.Though Saddleback is off to a good start, the team is still improving.

“Our communication is a lot better from our first game,” Higginson said.

With players eager to learn and improving as they go, and a lot of talent in the water, Higginson is optimistic about the upcoming games.

The Gauchos had a close one swing their way the night before, with an 11-10 last-second victory over Palomar during their two-day tournament at Saddleback. With only 20 seconds left in a tie-game, the Gauchos scored against the Comets to secure a season-opening victory.

The Gauchos will return to the pool Wednesday, Sept. 13 to face visiting Orange Coast College at 3 p.m. The men’s squad will follow immediately afterward at 4 p.m.
