Chargers sweep their way past Saddleback

The Saddleback College women’s Volleyball team received another tough blow after getting swept by Cypress in an conference match-up. In the first game the Gauchos loss was the worst deficit of any game played this season and the first time the team failed to score in double digits, losing the game 25-6. In the other matches the Gauchos were close but could not muster up a victory losing the second game 25-16 and the third game 25-19. Saddleback had trouble finding the right mix of combinations that would work together.

It was not until the third game of the match that the Gauchos strong serving got them into their first lead of the match 12-11.

Their lead jumped out to 2 points through Corey Freeman’s three consecutive aces.

Ashleigh Cottrell led the Gauchos with five kills and three solo blocks while Sarah Worley added three solo blocks.

Katie Harper had 11 defensive digs.

Jazmine Samoa’s nine kills led the Chargers while Katie Saavedra and Marina Samoa each had eight kills. Meatuai Fuatai had a remarkable 22 defensive digs for Cypress.

The loss against the Chargers extends the Gauchos losing streak to three in a row. Saddleback holds a current record of 2-6 and 0-1 in conference.

The Gauchos will head to Orange Coast college today for a 6 p.m. match against the Pirates. The Gauchos’ will then travel to Santa Ana City College on Friday to play an evening match at 7 p.m.
