Athlete of the semester for Irvine Valley College
The back-to-back state champion Irvine Valley men’s volleyball team was blessed with a back-to-back champ of its own.
Two-time Pacific Coast Conference players of the year Peter Johnson was named tournament most valuable player after the Lasers encored their semifinal sweep of Long Beach City College with a sweep of rival Orange Coast College in the 2008 California Community College Athletic Association Men’s Volleyball Championship.
The sophomore outside hitter led his team with 20 and 22 kills, respectively, in the matches.
In the 2007 season, Johnson and the team of 11 freshman and one sophomore broke the 14-year championship drought by bringing home IVC’s second title in program history.
Johnson co-led the team in the finals with 14 kills after a match-high 19 kills in the semifinals against Santa Monica College.
Johnson has signed a letter of intent to continue both his education and athletic career at University of California, San Diego.
