Saddleback’s winning streak extends to three, beat Canyons 44-26

The Gauchos triumphed again, this time against College of the Canyons, 44-26. After losing the first three games of the season, Saddleback has bounced back very nicely and has won its last three games. The Gauchos overall record now stands at 3-3. Their conference record is 2-0.

The first quarter was an eventful one, with both teams scoring two touchdowns each. Canyons missed its extra point on its first touchdown and the score after one quarter was 14-13 in favor of the Gauchos.

After a 39-yard field goal by freshman, kicker, Eric Harris and quarterback, Ricky Bautista’s third touchdown pass of the game, the Gauchos led at halftime 24-13. Saddleback’s defense was very successful in the second quarter, shutting out Canyons’ offense.

When play resumed after halftime, Saddleback’s offense did not slow down. Bautista connected with freshman, wide receiver, Dominic Collins for a four yard score and freshman, running back,Michael Neal ran in a touchdown from the one yard line making the score 37-13.

Canyons came out strong to start the fourth quarter, scoring 55 seconds in. Saddleback dashed their hopes of a comeback with their sixth touchdown of the game nearly four minutes later and secured their third win of the season. Canyons would score once more making the final score 44-26.

Quarterback Ricky Bautista had a really fine football day. He completed 27 passes for 330 yards and threw three touchdown passes. Freshman, running back, Myron Buchanan lead the charge rushing, as he ran for 150 yards, but did not score one of three rushing touchdowns the Gauchos had for the day.

“Our team played hard and well for a full 60 minutes, ” said head coach Mark McElroy. “I’m real proud of their attitude and effort.”

The Gauchos will travel to Grossmont College today and will try to extend their winning streak to four. The game is at 1 p.m.
