Saddleback women’s beach volleyball team started their season with a win against Glendale College on Friday Feb. 28 at the Irvine Great Park.

With clear skies and temperatures just over 80 degrees, it was a perfect day for some beach volleyball.

For those of you who dont know: Beach volleyball is composed by two team players in each court, duos of each team are distributed throughout five courts. Court one with Saddleback’s Ellie Groh and Julia Brown, court two with Ronnie Robinson and Shay Savoie, court three with Samantha Dougher and Serenity Broome, court four with Savannah Huerta and Kayla Castillo and court five with Brittany Roberson and Natalie Perales.

“They play hard and they play well, its impressive” says Saddleback beach volleyball head coach, Brian Hughes. “It’s their first match, they’re still trying to find their way and feel things out, but they’re doing a great job.”

Hughes is excited about the future opportunities these girls will get. They already have an internal drive and motivation of their own to learn a new sport, but as their head coach, Hughes helps them train their confidence and physical ability.

“We do the best we can on practice and on game day, it’s just go out, perform and hopefully they learn from the mistakes they made as well as the things they were able to be smart with and get better at,” Hughes said.

It was a constant battle for both teams, but Gauchos were able to keep the lead for most sets. Saddleback opened their beach volleyball season with a 4-1 victory that day.

“I’m already happy with their performances,” said Hughes. “That’s all you can really ask for.”

Gauchos volleyball team will be at a conference match with Golden West College and Palomar College on Friday, March 6.
