Saddleback College defeated San Diego City College in their home-opener at Doug Fritz Field 3-2, Friday afternoon.

After the Gauchos lost their first game of the season, they have improved in the past two games for a 2-1 overall record.  San Diego is now 0-1 on the season.

For the first few innings, both teams were unable to bring anyone in to score. Then in the fourth inning the Gauchos were able to bring home sophomore first baseman Mitchell Holland on an RBI single by freshman designated hitter Alex King.  Yet the Knights took the lead 2-1 in the top of the seventh when Bobby Martin scored on a wild pitch by sophomore Trey Ferketic.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Gauchos’ sophomore Brandon Cody hit an opposite field two run base hit to put the Gauchos up, 3-2.

Despite a ninth inning single to the outfield and a following walk for winning pitcher sophomore Coleman Hunter, freshman Logan Escudero was able to come in for the save with a three pitch strike out to end the game.

“The Knights are always a tough match up because they are scrappy,” Head Coach Sommer McCartney said following the game. “It’s always nice to pull out the tough wins.”

Saddleback is away at Chaffey College this upcoming Thursday at 2 p.m., before returning home for a doubleheader against Santa Barbara City College starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
