Athletes of the Week: April 13, 2009
Matt Van Dyke
On April 3, sophomore distance runner Matt Van Dyke set a new Saddleback College record in the 3,000 meter race. Van Dyke ran for a time of 8:52.34, which won the event for the Gauchos. Van Dyke broke the record previously set by Kyle Hughes in 2006.
Van Dyke returned to Saddleback after a tremdous freshman season. He was an All-State runner for the Gauchos in cross country and an All-Orange Empire Conference selection in track and cross country.
He was also a three-time All-CIF selection at Vista High School.
Megan Geier
Last Wednesday, against the Golden West College Rustlers, Geier went two for four with three runs batted in. Geier’s first RBI tied the game at three in the first inning. Her second and third RBI extended the lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Grier, 19, nursing, is a freshman outfielder for the Gauchos. She came to Saddleback after graduating from Mission Viejo High School. Grier was the MVP and captain of the junior varsity softball team during her tenure with the Diablos.
