TASTES: Guacamole Day

In honor of National Guacamole Day, Wednesday Sept. 16, here is an excellent recipe, simply titled Guacamole from Allrecipes.com that has over 3,500 reviews and a five star rating by Bob Cody.

Ingredients

  • 3 avocados – peeled, pitted, and mashed
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 roma (plum) tomatoes, diced
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper (optional)

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, mash together the avocados, lime juice, and salt. Mix in onion, cilantro, tomatoes, and garlic. Stir in cayenne pepper. Refrigerate 1 hour for best flavor, or serve immediately.

While the original guacamole recipe is fresh, flavorful, and delicious with a light lime taste. I personally have a few suggestions. I would add two or more avocados, reduce the cilantro to two tablespoons, and cut the salt to one half of a teaspoon. There is no explanation for what exactly a pinch means in terms of measurement, so I guessed one fourth of a teaspoon would be a good amount. I found this amount of cayenne pepper to be quite hot (in terms of flavor), but this may be because I don’t eat spicy foods often. (When I later made a general search online, the definition for a pinch of something is actually less than an eighth of a teaspoon and this may why I found my measurement to be too much.)

There is no estimated serving size on the website, but I would guess that it is enough for five to six people to snack on. The page for this recipe claims to have a 10 minute prep time and be ready in 10 minutes, however the time it took me to chop everything and mix it all together came to about an hour. My poor chopping skills and my need for everything to look nice for the photographs likely added much more time than it would take for the average person. I hope you get to enjoy this tasty snack and have a happy National Guacamole Day!
