Student dies from injuries sustained in BGS fire
The student injured in yesterday’s BGS building fire died Monday evening according to Orange County Fire Authority.
The unidentified student, described as a 21-year-old male, was airlifted to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana yesterday suffering from second and third degree burns. According to records from the Orange County Coroner’s Office, the victim was pronounced dead at 7:13 p.m. Monday.
Captain Jon Muir of the OCFA Public Information Office confirmed the student’s death Tuesday morning, and also confirmed that the fire has been ruled arson. Muir said that at the moment it is unclear if the victim was involved in the arson or not.
According to Muir, the fire caused $200,000 of structural damage and $200,000 of content damage. Earlier reports had said it was believed the fire started near an air conditioning unit, but Muir says those were initial reports, and they now believe the fire started in a, “lecture hall room on the third floor.”
Records from the OC Coroner’s Office list “BGS building, room 356″ as the location where the student was injured. The Saddleback College class schedule for the Summer 2013 term show that there were two classes, Social Psychology (PSYC 30) and Principles of Composition I (ENG 1A), set to take place in BGS rooms 356 and 357 roughly 20 minutes after the 911 call was placed.
