Secretary of Homeland Security to become next president of University of California system
According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has announced her resignation in order to take over as president of the University of California system.
Napolitano will replace outgoing UC President Mark Yudof, who announced his intentions to step down in January. A report from the Washington Post says that Napolitano will likely take over sometime in early September. Napolitano will become the 22nd President of the UC system, and she will also be the first woman to hold the position.
Napolitano previously served as the Attorney General of Arizona from 1999 to 2002, and was elected Governor of Arizona in 2003. In 2009, she was appointed by President Barack Obama as Secretary of Homeland Security, becoming the third person to hold the title and the first woman to do so.
