A new trustee was appointed last night to fill the vacancy in Area 7 of the South Orange County Community College District which represents Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita and some unincorporated areas. Frank “Mike” Meldau was sworn in following a public interview process and a 4-2 vote of the board leadership he will join. His term will end Nov. 2012.

A licensed clinical forensic psychologist, Meldau also has a strong background in higher education. He taught at Loma Linda University and supervised pre-doctoral students at Pepperdine University.

He has also worked with individuals and groups and has served as employee assistance counselor and in other positions that he would now represent in his new leadership role on the board.

“I am a strong supporter of the community college system, having started at a community college myself,” said Meldau. “I am excited and honored to have this opportunity to take an active role in the district’s leadership and assist students in their success.”

Meldau is particularly proud of his personal involvement in raising his daughter who recently graduated from Cal State San Marcos. During his interview, he said he had learned much about the challenges in higher education through her recent experiences.
