Kudos for achievements in Sacramento

Several members of the Saddleback College community were recognized in Sacramento for achievements representing Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and from the college’s journalism department.

Students Michael Clute and Sheila Azarkia were recognized on March 21 as part of the PTK All-California Academic Team. PTK is the national honor society for community college students. Clute and Azarkia were selected from thousands of applicants for accomplishments in grades, leadership and community service. President Tod Burnett also attended the award presentation.

Twelve members of the Lariat staff attended the Journalism Association of Community College’s annual state convention in the capital city. The students competed in various contests in writing, editing and design and multimedia. Students also attended workshops and seminars presented by experts in the field of journalism.

Awards were presented to Julie Tran for copy editing and Oliver Yu and MaryAnne Shults for multimedia team feature. The Lariat also received the award of General Excellence.

Saddleback’s journalism chairman, Mike Reed, was honored at the event’s awards banquet for his more than 25 years of service to JACC. Reed plans to retire from teaching this year.
