‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ was cancelled indefinitely by ABC for making comments about Charlie Kirk’s death.

One of the nation’s biggest TV station owners, known as Nexstar Media, announced on Sept. 18 that it would stop airing the popular program known as ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ due to Kimmel’s comments about the trending podcaster’s death.

Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 while debating with students at Utah Valley University. Kimmel joked about President Donald Trump’s response to Kirk’s death, as well as commenting on the alleged shooter which led to the suspension of his show.

“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located,” said Andrew Alford, president of Nextstar’s broadcasting division. “Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time.”

Kimmel’s team was seen packing all the equipment needed for the show the day it was cancelled, and many Americans filled the internet with rage and comments about the decision. Multiple said it was unjust to remove the show and that citizens were slowly losing their First Amendment rights.

Headlines like “More employers fire workers over Kirk posts as pressure from right mounts” and “Black Washington Post Journalist says she was fired over Charlie Kirk” surfaced on the internet along with Kimmel’s show being cancelled, ultimately leading to strong debates of freedom of speech and its limits, as well as the loss of the right.

“We are sleepwalking into a state of authoritarianism that will negatively affect all Americans, regardless of how you personally felt about Charlie Kirk”, said social media activist Matt Bernstein.

Americans are seen protesting all over the country and arguing with others on the internet about the issue. Los Angeles residents are also protesting right outside the building where filming of the show was done. Others are calling out employers who are prohibiting workers from using their First Amendment rights, as well as cancelling their Disney+ subscriptions and boycotting the company. According to social media account Hearasap, “Disney has lost $3.87 billion overnight following Jimmy Kimmel drama.”

Many have been boycotting and protesting ever since ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ was cancelled, and it was speculated that President Donald Trump had something to do with it. Currently, the same is being said for the cancellation of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, especially after Donald Trump’s celebration of the show being cancelled.

“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is cancelled,” said President Trump. “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has zero talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible.”

Well-known figures like Ben Stiller, Olivia Rodrigo, Pedro Pascal, Angelina Jolie and Jimmy Fallon have shown support for Kimmel through social media posts. Many other A-List individuals have signed an open letter condemning Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension and are facing backlash from supporters who disagree.

Kimmel is being asked to apologize and pay Charlie Kirk’s family if he wants the suspension lifted by ABC, according to one of the other affiliated broadcasting groups known as Sinclair. Multiple Americans are defending and standing for Kimmel, saying that he does not owe anyone an apology or money.

The debate of freedom of speech rights is currently at a high rate on social media and among communities due to all that is happening after Kirk’s death. Many say that this is not a debate between Democrats and Republicans, it is a debate between the people and the government. Censorship and freedom of speech rights are slowly being seized, and citizens are worried and urging others to stop fighting one another and instead unite against corruption.

EDIT: ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ returns tonight after the suspension is ended by ABC.
