Creative Writing Club Open Mic

Katherine Johnson | Lariat

On Thursday March 6, Saddleback College held an open mic in collaboration with Student Development and the Creative Writing Club at 5 p.m. in SSC 212.

This open mic was dedicated to the celebration of Women’s History Month. It also featured Womxn of the World Poetry Slam Champion Ebony Stewart. She read her poetry about her experiences as a black woman, her relationship with her niece in talking about being a woman and her poem from a writing prompt about using grounding techniques. Stewart invited students in attendance to derive their own meaning from her final poem to share.

It was a great opportunity for people to come and break out of their shell by engaging in a variety of storytelling and poetry. A podium laid a sheet of paper to the corner where people could write their name down and get called up to the stage to perform. Several students shared their poetry.

Free drinks, snacks and pizza were available for people to consume as they sat at tables decorated with buttons for International Women’s Day.

Chris Hargraves from Student Development was responsible for the creation of this event. He was inspired by organizations he used to work for that put on events for students through NACA (National Association for Campus Activities)Jamal Brown the project specialist from Student Development performed some of his own poetry.

Funding came from the student government and the Equity Access and Inclusion group.

The next Women’s History Month event  took place on March 27 at the same location in a panel for One Book, One College.

If interested in joining the creative writing club, attend a meeting at GW 232 every Wednesday from 1:30 p.m to 3 p.m. The next open mic will be April 11 at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the first floor of the BGS building.
