Former Gaucho football player dies

Former Saddleback College football player Zach Cornwell, who was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County last Sunday for apparent kidney problem, passed away last Saturday, April 4.

Cornwell, 20, played in eight games for the Gauchos last fall before transferring to nearby Orange Coast College. Cornwell had redshirted in 2013 before earning a starting job at Saddleback as right a guard last fall.

Before playing in college, Cornwell played at JSerra Catholic High School for two years and Newport Harbor High School for his junior and senior years. He played offensive tackle and defensive tackle at Newport Harbor. Cornwell earned all-Sunset League honors and third team All-Orange County honors his senior year with the Sailors. According to Cornwell’s high school coach Kevin Emerson, there will be a service for Cornwell, Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach.
