Art Gallery begins preparing for student juried show.
The Saddleback College Art Gallery will host the Fourth Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition on May 6 through the 16. Entries are now being accepted for the exhibition through the art gallery.
Participating students will have the opportunity to submit up to four works of art for a $5 submission fee. Judges will only be able to pick one artwork among four submitted work by one person.
The show’s winners will be selected by the students. Any Saddleback student will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artwork during gallery hours. Awards will include: Best in the Show, Best of Category, Honorable Mention, President’s Award and also the Dean’s Award.
Up to 80 works of art are expected to be featured in the student art show.
“It’s always different every time,” says Gallery Director, Bob Rickerson. “There is no one similar way to do it. One of my jobs to do is to make sure all of the mediums are covered and are equal among the different art classes.”
The process will first involve the art faculty selecting the artwork for the show, but the students will vote for their favorite artwork by casting ballots for each category.
“Once the process with the faculty is done, we have the Saddleback students come in. They can be any student, it doesn’t matter and vote for the art they think is the strongest piece.”
Rickerson has curated the show for 11 years now and believes non-art students should have the ability to have a strong role in the decision making of the art show.
“What I like about this process is that you get more of a general impression of people’s taste as compared to people who have a general background in art,” Rickerson said.
Submittal dates for the student show began April 6 and will accept works until the 12th of this week in the art gallery. Voting begins May 6 with the awards being announced on Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. in the gallery.
