South Orange County is often accused for having little or nothing to do during the week.

One of the few perks of living this far south is the high quality Mexican food, and with Mexican restaurants comes a great mid week escape: Taco Tuesday.

Tortilla Flats located on the Mission Viejo Lake, provides an old time, adobe brick, authentic Mexican feel.

“With a minimum of one beverage purchase, chicken or beef tacos are $1 in the cantina and drink specials “, said manager Jonathan Tapia. “The cantina is for21 and older only and the DJ starts at 7 p.m. I urge people to arrive early because we enforce a $5 cover charge after 9 p.m.”

For a younger crowd and more modern feel, Fred’s Cantina located next to the Ocean Ranch movie theater off of Golden Lantern and Camino del Avion.

Starting at 4 p.m. chicken, carnitas, calamari and mahi tacos run for $2, while sirloin steak and Cajun shrimp tacos go for $3.

Drink specials include $2 house margaritas.

Guests can also enjoy Fred’s two pool tables. No one under 21 is allowed in after 10 p.m.

Those who seek a more family oriented atmosphere can visit Flamingo’s Mexican Grill and Bar located in Laguna Hills on La Paz and McIntyre.

“Shredded beef or chicken tacos are $1.25 with a minimum of one beverage purchase”, said Flamingo’s owner Gabriel Franco. “Margaritas and well drinks are $3.50 while domestic beers are $2.50 from after 4 p.m. It’s fun for the whole family but expect a 20 to 30 minute wait between from 6 to 8:30 p.m.”

Those who seek the overpriced, commercialized chain restaurants can visit El Torito Grill located in the Kaleidoscope center. Beers are a dollar less than the usual price so a can of Tecate ends up being $4.50, while tacos run for $1.50.

On the other end of the spectrum, Taco Mesa located in the Albertson’s plaza off of Crown Valley and Cecil Pasture has fresh authentic and delicious tacos for $1 all day long.

At the same time, there is always the Cheech and Chong special at Del Taco, with three tacos for $1.09 on Tuesdays.
