Softball falls to Santa Ana

Despite two big home runs, the Saddleback women’s softball team lost to Santa Ana College 5-2 in last Friday’s Orange Empire Conference match-up at Saddleback College.

The first home run was crushed by sophomore left fielder Shannon Wilkison in the bottom of the first inning, and gave Saddleback an early lead. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Bertoglio smashed her home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning. These home runs brought the Gauchos’ home run total to 35 on the season.

The Dons’ three runs in the second inning elevated them above the Gauchos’ early lead. Shelly Tait’s home run in the third inning and RBI in the seventh inning helped Santa Ana seal their victory over Saddleback 5-2.

This loss knocked Saddleback down into a third place tie in the OEC. The Gauchos take on Santiago Canyon College at Santiago Canyon Wednesday at 3 p.m., and return home to play Cypress College on Friday at 1 p.m. at Saddleback.
