Saddleback women’s bounces back after slow start
With a winning match against Southwestern College, Saddleback College’s girl’s volleyball team won 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-12).
Some of the top players included freshman libero Rachel Talafus from San Clemente High School, she took initiative with the passing when the team was having difficulties.
Freshman hitter Katie Harper from Capistrano Valley High School also stepped it up. Starter and freshman Kate Fuentes from El Toro High School became injured the night before, it was Harper’s chance to prove herself which she did so with plenty of kills throughout the match.
There were also many good blocks from freshmen middle blockers Sarah Worley from Capistrano Valley High School and Ashleigh Cottrell from Oceanside High School.
Team Captain Amber Richter, sophomore setter from Capistrano Valley High School, set the tone for the match with great sets and blocks, while setting the team up to do well.
Harper averaged 5 kills per game with both Worley and Cottrell averaging 4 kills per game. Richter was a top server in the game with no outs and a few aces as well.
“I think that in regards to preparing we are well on our way and working on team skills more than individual skills” Worley Said.
But still have stuff that needs to be worked on with defense. But as far as enthusiasm and athleticism, we are on top of our game and ready for next Wednesday’s game,” stated Worley.
Saddleback College host Grossmont on Wednesday at 5p.m. On Saturday the Gauchos will be in the Santa Ana Tournament held at the Don’s Gymnasium. The Event runs all day.
