Sabella takes over the clubs for women’s golf

Saddleback College announced that Gary Sabella has been named the Women’s Golf Coach as of the Fall 2008 season.

Sabella was the boy’s and girls’ coach at Trabuco Hills High School while he was the head of the athletic department prior to his retirement in 2003.

He inherits a program that has won six of the past eight Orange Empire Conference titles while qualifying for post season play the last nine seasons.

Sabella played baseball at Los Angeles Harbor College where he was a star which earned him a scholarship to play at Pepperdine University where he played for three seasons.

While at Pepperdine he earned both bachelor and masters’ degrees.

His first coaching job was at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, where he served as an assistant football coach as well as the freshmen basketball coach and jv baseball coach.

Before taking the job to be athletic director and golf coach at Trabuco in prior to the school’s opening in 1985, Sabella was a junior high principal.

He led the mustangs to eight league championships, winning CIF in 1993 and state in 1992.

He plans on achieving the same success here at Saddleback, sophomore’s Brittany Ruble and Karolyne Crowe both from Murrieta Valley High School had solid seasons for the Gauchos in 2007.

Ruble, played in every match for the gauchos last season averaging a 85 through 17 rounds.

Crowe missed one match averaging a 85.3.

Both earned team all conference honors.

“I’ve talked with a couple of the returning players and I’m anxious to get out there and start recruiting” Sabella said. The Gauchos golf team will face Santa Ana at the Riverview Golf Course on Monday September 22nd at 11 am.
