Porn gains online speed

Many Americans do not feel shame in turning on a computer to view adult entertainment videos or pictures when they are curious about sex.

This state of mind accounts for the current rise in statistics for online pornography in the United States.

According to Family Safe Media, every second in the U.S., $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography, 28,258 Internet users are viewing pornography and 372 Internet users are typing adult search terms into search engines.

“It’s disgusting that people would watch online porn,” said Trisha Bui, 17, undecided. “But they can, and will, do what they want.”

Today, America has the fourth largest pornographic industry in the world, producing a new pornographic video every 39 minutes. While China takes the lead, South Korea takes a close second and Japan is in third.

In 2006, the combined adult entertainment revenue was greater than that of ABC, CBS, and NBC ratings in America combined. From 2001-2006, America’s number of online porn site visitors has quadrupled, jumping from 18.75 million devotees to 75 million a month.

Internet porn does not make as much money as video porn, but, it does make more revenue than exotic dance, ‘mature’ cable shows/movies, triple X novelties, and pornographic magazines.

The U.S. currently has 244,661,900 triple X websites available to its citizens; the largest amount compared to every other country in the world.

By law, viewers must be at least 18 years of age to gain access to these adult websites, but the average age that an individual is introduced to online nudity is actually 11, according to the Family Safe Media’s Children Internet Pornography Statistics.

“You should have to be 18 to see what’s on these sites. It should be censored until you prove that you’re 18,” said Katie Beck, 18, marine biology. “It’s too easy for kids to get on porn websites.”

The statistics also state that 80 percent of 15-17 year-old teens are exposed to such sites on a regular basis. There are clips of mature images and videos that are available to anyone who visits a porn site.

There are frequently pop-ups used to advertise porn sites that contaminate the viewer’s computer. These virus infested ads are usually uncensored, meaning that they are open to anyone, at any age, and for free.

“I have a nine-year-old son who surfs the Internet, so I’m not pro choice [for online porn],” said Alissa Ohlander, 27, nursing. “The pop ups for these sites are not censored. They figured out how to make money, so they don’t care who is affected by them.”

Bui says that even though she doesn’t visit pornography websites, she still gets pop-ups.

According to Family Safe Media, of the thirteen top U.S. Erotica important cities, three belong to California. Los Angeles is number one, San Francisco is fifth and San Diego is eighth.

Despite the fact that the largest consumers of Internet porn is the 35-49 age group, many college students have friends that get their dose of entertainment from triple X sites.

“What people want to do with their own time is up to them,” said Beck. “It’s fine as long as I don’t have to see it.”
