Two of our most popular plants in Southern California

The greenhouse had is fall plant sale on November 15 and 16 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The plants there were grown by the staff for this plant sale specifically. The staff grows the plants every year for the sale; but the students taking horticulture classes takes their plants home.

“About 99.9 percent of the money made in the sale goes towards scholarships,” Robert Farnsworth said. Farnsworth was in charge of the plant sale and also explained, “The rest of the money goes to seeds, pots, and dirt; so the plant sales can continue in the future.”

According to Farnsworth the scholarships are for students who are studying horticulture, landscape design, and environmental science studies.

There are two plant sales every school year; one in the fall and another in the spring.

“The greenhouse generates around $7,000 to $9,000 in the two plant sales,” Farnsworth said. He also explained that some of the “most popular plants were the flats of pansies because they sold out quickly” although it was hard to tell.

There were also bowls of herbs, ginger, and even sword ferns. Out of all of their hanging plants they had many epiphyllums hanging all around the canopy outside. “The epiphyllum is very popular,” Farnsworth said.

Other hanging plants could be seen all over the canopy outside the green house. Some of the plants hanging from the canopy also included the Christmas Cactus, which were $10 and the Night Blooming Cactus, costing $15.

Buyers could be seen hauling wheelbarrows full of plants to their cars as they chose many different types of selections. It is understandable why as the green house offered some of the very colorful plants such as viola sorbert and hibiscus.

The violas were a very nice purple or violet and the hibiscus came in a few colors which included red, and pink.

The greenhouse has many varieties to offer both buyers and students if they are interested in purchasing some nice plants for their house or garden. If one were to miss the sale that student or buyer should not fret since the green house will have another sale in the spring.
