Saddleback College looked to crack the rankings against third-ranked Mt. San Antonio last week.

That didn’t happen. It’ll try again at Homecoming Saturday, when the Gauchos host No. 20 Santa Ana.

Homecoming events begin at 4:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 6.The unranked Gauchos made a strong effort to take a win against Mt. San Antonio but fell short, losing in overtime, 23-20.

The Gauchos trailed, 17-14 , late in the fourth quarter, but managed a drive that lasted six minutes and went 69 yards.

The key play came from quarterback David Ingram on a fourth down and nine. He threw a pass20 yards down field for the first down.

Later in the drive Micah Abreu-Laybon scored from the Mounties one-yard line for his second touchdown of the day.

The kickoff was taken back to the Gauchos’ 45-yard line by Dominique Gaisie – a 54-yard return that gave the Mounties the momentum they needed to tie the score.

They managed that 28 seconds later when Mountie kicker Jacob Harfman sailed a 49-yard field goal to send the Mt. San Antonio crowd into a frenzy. That sent the game into overtime.

Saddleback won the toss and elected to play defense first in overtime.

The Mounties gained only one yard in overtime, but Harfman was ready to answer the call again as he kicked a 42-yard field goal giving the Mounties a 23-20 lead. As Saddleback got the ball back and tried to answer back or the game would have been lost.

The Gauchos ran for a total of 280 yards in the game, led by sophomore Abreu-Laybon who had 165 yards.

Freshmen Jai Morris also chipped in 119 yards as well.

The Gauchos struggled running the ball in overtime.

The Gauchos wanted to attempt a 42-yard field goal to tie the score. But a delay of game cost the Gauchos five yards and took them out of field goal range.

The Gauchos’ special teams unit tried to rush off the field as the offense tried to take a snap but the yellow flags were thrown again as the Gauchos suffered yet another delay of game penalty.

Facing a fourth and 21, Ingram threw a pass intended for Jay Wisner and the game went to Mt. San Antonio.
