Mercy rule ends slaying of Pirates
The Saddleback softball team routed visiting Orange Coast College, 15-0, April 15 before the umpire called the game because of the mercy rule in the fifth-inning.
Lauren Molina was the starting pitcher for the Gauchos, giving up only three hits and zero runs in four innings pitched.
Relieving Molina was Dana Hermocillo. The freshman finished out the last inning of the game, pitching a perfect score-less and run-less inning.
The visiting Pirates didn’t find the same success on the mound Wednesday afternoon.
OCC pitcher Michelle Colby had a rough four innings, giving up 12 hits, 11 earned runs and nine walks. She didn’t even have the chance to pitch in the fifth, as the game was called by rule of mercy.
After the explosive six run bottom of the second, it was clear the Gauchos were dominating the game.
It wasn’t until the eight-run fourth inning that the umpire called the game. The mercy rule is when any team is ahead by eight runs after the fifth.
Gauchos Yvonne Canedo, Traci Everett, and Lauren Zierer all went two for three at the plate, as catcher Krystal Navarro hit a perfect two for two.
The only productive Pirate was shortstop Janae Rivera, who also went two for two.
The only other hit given up was to Pirate Crystal Gonzales. The freshman went one for two.
Saddleback will take on Cypress, April 23, as it prepares to head to the Southern California Regionals, May 3.
