Thanks to it’s new location in the Learning Resource Center and the added support of faculty and student tutors, free tutoring for Saddleback students just got easier.
All semester long, free tutoring is available for students enrolled in a class at Saddleback College on Monday through Thursday from 8am to 8pm, and Fridays from 8am-2pm. Since 1978, students have had access to free tutoring services at Saddleback. However, since the remodeling of the LRC a major effort has been made by staff members to expand the tutoring department. Simply by adding the no credit, no cost “Tutoring 300” course offered in the class schedule, students can take advantage of this opportunity. Last semester, over 2,000 students signed up for Tutoring 300, and this semester that number is expected to grow closer to 3,000.
“In moving into the LRC facility, tutoring is taking a quantum leap in academic support for Saddleback students”, Said Patti Weekes, Director of Learning Assistance. She describes the new home as the “best location ever”.
The LRC’s central location and the tutoring center’s home on the second floor, as well as the large number of students it accommodates, provides a fresh take on student tutoring. Weekes hopes to see 25,000 students come through the tutoring center in the course of one day, all donning the required tutoring center hand stamps.
As the tutoring center’s location grows, so does the quality of the services provided. Teachers are now paid to be in the center from the time it opens to the time it closes, allowing a faculty member to constantly be available to answer questions and supervise. The best part: student tutors are required to know what is going on in Saddleback classrooms, perpetuating their specific curriculum and methodology.
In short, the LRC tutoring center offers students exactly what they need to know, when they need to know it.
