Saddleback’s baseball team played its forth game of the season Thursday against Irvine Valley College at its conference rival’s home opener.

The Gauchos dropped the game 6-2 to brings its record to 2-2 early in the season.

This was a non conference game to open the Casey Stengal tournament, which was hosted by Cerritos College. But games have been played around Community Colleges in the area.

The Lasers jumped on freshmen Saddleback pitcher Rich Kemp in the first inning.

Irvine’s Abel Medina hit a first inning double which scored a run and he later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by IVC freshmen Corey Thibault. After the first inning, the Lasers were ahead 2-0.

Things got rockier for Kemp in the bottom of the second inning. Irvine’s Brian Ferrante hit a mammoth two run home run to put the Lasers ahead by four.

Saddleback had its chances to get back into the game. In the top of the sixth inning, the Gauchos scored a pair of runs on multiple hits to make it a 5-2 ball game.

And once again in the seventh inning, the Gauchos had runners on first and third, but a strike out and a fly out ended the inning.

“We’re young,” said Saddleback assistant coach Sommer McCartney. “Our pitchers are very young as well but their also very talented.”

The Gauchos will play West LA College 11 a.m. Feb. 16 .
