Lariat staff honored at state journalism convention

Lariat staff show off awards won at journalism convention.

The Lariat staff walked away with awards in seven-of-nine competitions entered at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges state conference recently.

The conference took place Thursday afternoon until Saturday evening (April 3-5) in Los Angeles at the Wilshire Grand Hotel.

The conference provided opportunities for students to attend workshops and enter on-the-spot competitions. Editor-in-chief, Cerise Ostrem placed second in on-the-spot sports writing and took honorable mention in the sports photo competition.

Fall editor Ryan Kuhn won fourth place in the sports mail-in category.

Third place was awarded to Lariat staff member Megan Crothers for her editorial cartoon about Southern California ShakeOut and earthquake preparation. It was her first attempt at editorial drawing.

Nikki Jagerman won second place in opinion writing for an editorial written about the same topic. The win wasn’t a first for Jagerman. She placed second in the Fall at the JACC SoCal Conference at CS Fullerton and picked up honorable mention at the 2007 state conference in Sacramento.

The copy editing competition resulted in honorable mentions for Rodrigo Azurmendi and Sarah Kovash.

Kara Willingham was awarded a $100 “continuing education scholarship” in order to pursue an education in journalism.

First-year Adviser Paul McLeod received his second Extra Mile Award. McLeod has been a volunteer with the organization for about a decade. He began working with JACC as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times. He was also honored in 2006.

The 2007 Orange Appeal magazine earned general excellence in addition to first place for magazine layout design and first place for magazine cover.

Line Elliot took third place in magazine profile feature and Tim Copeland captured third for magazine line illustration. Chris Poblete won honorable for magazine line illustration.
