IVC back in playoff picture

The Irvine Valley women’s basketball team defeated Golden West, 61-49, in an Orange Empire Conference game last Friday at Concordia University.

The Lasers (15-7, 4-2) came into the contest with a three-game winning streak, while the Rusters (6-15, 0-6) came in on a losing streak and in tbe basement of the OEC standings.

Irvine Valley, playing without star guard Jenna Schonfeld, started the game on a 19-2 run that was led by Raycie Haley’s hot hand. She led the team in scoring in the first half with 10 points and finished with 11, but had to leave the game early in the second half with a lower-back injury.

The Rustlers didn’t make their first field goal until there was 7:52 remaining in the first half. They did eventually make a game of it, though, finishing the first half on a 17-7 lead and cutting the Lasers’ lead to six points at halftime.

At the start of the second half, the Lasers looked determined. Patrice Fuentes scored six points in the span of two minutes and Ashley Dunn scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half.

“It felt so good for my team and I to get to big victories to put us back in the running for playoffs, said Schonfeld.

IVC travels to face the Gauchos Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
