Gauchos softball team set to start season Monday

UPDATE: Due to the softball field still being unplayable and a scheduling conflict with Grossmont’s softball team, Monday’s game was canceled. No make up date has been announced yet. Gauchos are now looking at beginning their season Thursday January 31 at 3:00 p.m. versus the Palomar Comets.

After a weekend of rain postponed their last matchup, the Saddleback softball team now looks to open their season Monday, January 28, against the Grossmont College Griffins.

This will be the Griffins’ first game of the season too, as their weekend games against El Camino College and Golden West College were both cancelled due to rain.

The Gauchos will be sending freshman pitcher Sydney Abounassar out to start on Monday. Abounassar is a right handed thrower from El Dorado High School, where she lettered in basketball and softball. She will be facing off against the Griffins’ right-hander, sophomore Kelsey Townsend. Townsend started 17 games for Grossmont last season, putting together a 9-7 record with a 3.84 ERA in the Pacific Coast Conference. She led the Griffins in strikeouts with 47, while only walking 18 batters.

Monday’s match is tentatively scheduled for 3:00 at the Saddleback softball field. Due to the weekend’s rain, the field will be evaluated Monday morning, and a decision will be made then as to whether or not the field will be in playable condition.
