From rock ‘n’ roll to house music

Music has definitely evolved over the last 60 years, but has it changed for the better or the worse?

The ‘50s and ‘60s provided old school jazz and the start of rock ‘n’ roll. Artists that brought rock ‘n’ roll into existence were The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and several others.

This era provided some good music, but not the best. It was merely more of a precursor to the ‘70s and ‘80s where there would be more my style of music.

The ‘70s and ‘80s had the best music by a mile. These era’s also showcased the best overall talent than any other decades of music.

The 1970s and 1980s featured some fantastic bands, such as Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Queen, Metallica, Rush, The Bee Gees, and plenty more exciting artists.

This was the era of where Hard Rock and Metal would be introduced. Many people say that Black Sabbath started Heavy Metal in the ‘60s, but I believe that it was Zeppelin that really made Metal such a lovable sound.

There was a large diversity of music displayed in these eras. Heavy metal, rock ‘n’ roll, reggae, country, southern rock, and even disco was listened to by the majority of the country. A large percent of the population including me, enjoyed each of the these different genres.

Saddleback student Bart Piwczynski said, “I like the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s more than the music from today and the ‘50s and ‘60s.”

Aside from Woodstock, the ‘70s and ‘80s was when drugs played a large roll in music. Bands and the majority of their fans were on drugs.

It didn’t matter if the musicians would forget lyrics or play the wrong chords, everyone was so under the influence that they were all having a great time anyway.

Pop music became a huge hit in the late ‘80s thanks to Michael Jackson, and pop would become one of the most predominant genres in music today.

The ‘90s is the era of music that I was born into, and it was a very interesting time in music. Grunge music was introduced, thanks to Nirvana. Nirvana was voted in the top 20 artists of all time because they changed music, but I was never a big fan of them.

Hip hop also became very popular with artists like Tupac, Notorious B.I.G, and Eminem. I enjoy hip hop from this era quite a bit more than the hip hop that the music today provides.

The music today has changed predominately from the previous years. The most popular music consists of mainstream pop, auto tuned hip hop, and techno. Mainstream pop artists such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Justin Bieber are awful and have no talent.

I am also not a huge fan of techno music and disc jockeys, because it doesn’t require a lot of talent. Anyone could learn quickly how to turn knobs to make them sound a certain way. There are a few good artists out there though like Drake and Kings of Leon.

“I don’t like the mainstream pop music today,” Piwczynski said. “There’s still some good artists today, like Drake and some others.”

Music in my opinion has ultimately changed for the worse, but there still are some great artists out there. I’ll stick to the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and Drake. Everyone else can enjoy techno and Justin Bieber, but it’s for not me.

Former Saddleback student Kara Richardson said, “I think it’s wonderful that every era sounds so different, but the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s are my favorites.”
