Environmental Awareness Club and Scholarship Foundation team for fundraising

This year the Environmental Awareness club has joined forces with the Saddleback College Foundation scholarship to help “educated and motivate students on the impacts that each of us have on this earth”, the club’s flyer said.

Their hope for this year is to raise $1000 to the foundation for a student majoring in environmental studies, has a 3.0 GPA, and plans on using the money for their time at Saddleback. The club plans on having fundraisers like bake sales and other philanthropy events to achieve their goal.

“We have decided to do something really great this semester, so we are starting a scholarship fund,” club president, Candice Morey, 29, environment, said. “We are doing a few different events this semester, but our main one is our bake sale.”

The Environmental Awareness held the bake sale on Oct. 26 from 10a.m. to 2p.m. last Tuesday selling all the certain snacks that a college student might enjoy, all of which were seasonally decorated.

For this year to be more rewarding and to be able to give more back to the community Environmental Awareness hopes to get more people involved in the club, and therefore having the option of opening the club to more members school-year-around, Morey said.

“We are planning on doing many fundraisers this semester and next semester, since next semester will have doing Earth week and co-organizing the events,” Morey said.

Upcoming events that the club will attend include “A Date With Nature”at the Donna O’Neill Land Conservancy to raise donations, complete a Marine life survey in Newport back bay, going to the Orange County Sanitation District to understand the system, visiting a rescue of seals at the marine mammal center at Laguna Beach, and holding a movie night with environmental-related films.

Feel like getting involved in the club? For more information about Environmental Awareness, club meetings are held every other Tuesday at 5p.m. in the Student Services Building Room 211C. The next meeting is on Nov. 16. Anyone interested in protecting the environment is invited, including non-student community members.
