Volleyball: IVC sweeps Fullerton

The IVC volleyball team served up a sweet dish of revenge to Fullerton College Wednesday night winning all three sets on their home court, 25-15, 25-15, 25-14. The first time these teams met in October, it was the Fullerton Hornets who defeated IVC in the fifth set.
IVC head coach Tom Pestolesi was very impressed with the way his team played Wednesday night.
“We were very focused tonight,” Pestolesi stated. “I told them it was really hard to hold the team to 15 points. Doesn’t matter who you’re playing – it’s hard to hold a team to 15 points. I think they did a great job of doing that throughout all three games.”
The IVC Lasers now have an impressive overall record of 13-5 and 7-5 in conference.
Last Friday, the Lasers gained momentum through their defeat of previously unbeaten state-ranked no. 2 Orange Coast College.
“We came out of OCC strong and we’re playing a lot better than we have been,” Lasers freshman Lauren Bender stated.
Bender served the fateful spike that would end the third period and win the game.
Sophomore Allison Cook also shined throughout the game with her accurate spikes that Fullerton didn’t stand a chance against.
Fullerton gained a slight momentum at the beginning of the third period when they led 4-0, but their inability to block IVC’s intense spikes led to their downfall.
IVC Freshman Amanda Trimble noticed that her team has grown more efficient at working together throughout the season and she felt that is their greatest secret for winning.
“We played together as a team,” Trimble stated, “and we didn’t let them play better than us. We need to keep making sure we play together as a team and keep that up.”
Pestolesi acknowledged the challenging setbacks his team has faced this season.
“We’ve been dinged up,” Pestolesi stated. “We lost Sinead O’Neill to a bad finger, we lost Alexis Radecki to a stress fracture, and girls have been sick. Amanda Kaae had been hurt earlier. We now have 10 bodies – we went from 15 to 10. But they’re doing a good job and as long as they stay healthy we’ll keep playing good.”
IVC sophomore Avae Masaniai thought her team played a very controlled game.
“I think we just took care of our side more than anything, because last time I think we just beat ourselves, so I think we just took care of it,” Masaniai stated.
Pestolesi has his own theory as to why IVC is playing so well.
“As corny as it sounds, I think they’re starting to believe that they’re pretty good. They’re playing with confidence and we’re finally kind of understanding our roles,” Pestolesi stated.
The Lasers play their last home game Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Riverside.
