A profile feature about Saddleback College basketball player Devonte Klines, a freshman who played as a guard for the Gauchos this past season, was published to the Lariat website last Monday, April 25. It was published in the Wednesday, April 27 print edition.  During an interview with the author,  Mr. Klines made comments about his perspective on treatment he received while a student at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

In response to the article, SMCHS released this statement to the Lariat staff today:

Santa Margarita Catholic High School has zero tolerance for racism. SMCHS is an inclusive community guided by the love of Christ that values diversity. We wish Devonte the best of luck as he continues his basketball and academic career at Montana State University. We were honored he requested to return to his alma mater earlier this month to sign his National Letter of Intent at SMCHS taking part in the school’s  National Signing Day ceremony. The school staff was appreciative of the positive comments he shared that morning regarding his experience at Santa Margarita.
