Saddleback vs. Palomar @ Palomar (L 0-2)

The Gauchos couldn’t find an answer against Palomar’s Bobby Shaw on Tuesday, Feb. 3, as the sophomore righty threw five shutout innings and allowed just two hits.

Saddleback (3-4) could not muster any offense against Shaw and four other Comet relievers, as the Gauchos produced just six base runners the entire game, including two walks and a hit batter.

Freshman catcher Dalton Sype (Laguna Beach High) reached base twice, doubling for Saddleback’s only extra-base hit in the shutout loss. Freshmen shortstop Darren Coombs (Palm Desert High) and second-baseman Sean Parvin (Northwood High) managed the Gauchos’ only other hits against the Comets.< /p>

Freshman right-hander Tim Troyer struck out five and allowed just one run, but suffered his first loss of the season thanks to the offense’s disappearing act.

Saddleback collected nine strikeouts against the Comets, with freshman Chris Waldmann (Mission Viejo High) cashing in twice and freshman Taylor Burns (St.Francis Xavier High) and sophomore Rich Kemp (Mission Viejo High) contributing one apiece to go along with Troyer’s five.
