Saddleback College women’s soccer team got a commanding victory over Orange Coast College at home on Friday. Saddleback scored early and held on to get their fourth victory in the Orange Empire Conference. The win puts Saddleback’s record to 4-2-3 in the OEC and 8-2-3 overall, trailing the Irvine Valley College Lasers for third place in the conference.

“We knew it was going to be a battle, as we knew both teams were sitting in third or fourth place,” said assistant coach, Sean Melendez said.” It was a pivotal game for the second half of the season.”

The Gauchos scored their first goal under the 3 minute mark as sophomore, forward and captain, Danyelle Allen put the ball passed the goalie.

“We certainly started strong as we got the goals we needed early,” said head coach, BJ McNicol. ”There are parts of the game we can still tighten up.”

OCC got close to scoring in the 3:30 mark, as they hit the cross bar. The goaltender had another shut out for Scott and the Gauchos as the defense played.

“I thought at the beginning twenty minutes we did really well which we were rewarded early,”said sophomore, midfielder, captain, Krista Flores said.

Saddleback is clearing their injury list as the season moves along. A healthy roster for the Gauchos will help their effort in the second half of the season.

“The second half was better for me as it was nice to beat this team,” said No.7, forward, freshman  Danielle Scelsi. “We had a lot of history with them.”

Saddleback’s next game is against Norco College on Friday at 3 p.m. Norco’s record stands at 0-9 in conference and 2-11 overall.

“I’ve been coaching too long to assume,” McNicol said. ”We play Norco next Friday…they could be an easy game if we score early on easy chances.”
