The Gauchos’ bats continued to stay active in support of a solid pitching performance in Saddleback’s victory against Glendale Community College, 5-2, at Doug Fritz Field on Tuesday.

After the lead off hitter for the Vaqueros lined to left and reached base safely, sophomore pitcher Anthony Shew, 20, now (2-0), settled in for seven innings with seven strikeouts and allowed only a single base runner to reach, on a walk.

“Today was about getting back on the horse for the team after that tough double header that everyone threw in, but me, so I wanted to help pick my teammates up,” said Shew. “I came to the game knowing I had to go deep to help my bullpen for the next few games, so I stuck to the fastball and hoped for the best.”

Since the beginning of the season, the Gauchos have had at least nine hits in all seven games. Shew was given an early two run lead in the second that continued to grow as the Gauchos had eleven total hits with another eight reaching on walks/HBP. Freshman Dylan Diaz led the offensive surge going 3-3 with two walks, two doubles and two RBIs.

“It was good to get back into the win column after Saturday,” Head Coach Sommer McCartney said after the game. “We’ve got good kids that work hard, good students, I like our pitching staff and were hitting the ball well. I think we’ve got a pretty bright future, but we need to start showing it.”

Saddleback is now 4-3 on the season while Glendale falls to 3-4. The Gauchos have their next three games on the road at San Diego City College (2-3), Chaffey College (1-5) and San Diego Mesa College (4-1) before returning home to host a two game set against Cuesta (1-4) Friday February 21 at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m..
