Lady Gauchos strike first; take Round 1 of Cup

In the first ever Presidents’ Cup held at Saddleback College, the Gauchos flexed their muscles in a statement game last Friday night. The Saddleback Women’s Basketball team faced off against rival Irvine Valley College.

The Gauchos started the game off on an 11-0 run, which quickly put the Lasers in a hole early on in the game.

 By the middle of the first half the Laser’s chipped away to 14-9 Gaucho lead. But that was the closest the Lasers would get in the game.
 By half time the Gauchos were well in the lead 30-17. The  key stat of the game was the points off turnovers. The Gauchos scored 23 points off the Lasers 24 turnovers.

The Lasers only scored 7 points off the Gauchos 14 turnovers.

The Gauchos won the game 65-40, leaving the Lasers win- less in OEC conference play at a record of 0-4 as Saddleback went to 2-1 in conference.

Keisha Cox led all scorers with 23 points and got herself a double-double with 12 rebounds. As a team the Gauchos shot 33 percent from the field and the Lasers 29 percent.

 Both teams struggled from the free throw line. The Gauchos shot 45 percent and the Lasers 41 percent.

The Lasers leading scorer was Courtney Kollasch who had 16 points going 7 for 14 from the field. She had seven rebounds but turned the ball over six times.

The Gauchos Johnondra Patterson, also had herself quite the game. Finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds, she also had 4 steals.

The Gauchos took round one of the Presidents’ cup, the second round of the Presidents’ Cup will take place at IVC on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The Gauchos will host Cypress College tonight at 5:30 p.m. Cypress College comes into the  game also  with a 2-1 record in OEC play and has a 14-8 record overall.

On Friday, the Gauchos will play at Fullerton, which has a 3-0 record in conference, a 16-7 record overall. Both games will be pivotal for the Gauchos.

The Lasers will play at Riverside on Thursday  at 5:30 p.m.
