IVC round-up – 9/30/09

Zach Cavanagh

Women’s volleyball:

The Lasers were scheduled to have a match against Moorpark College last Wednesday. The match was cancelled due to poor air conditions stemming from the wildfires affecting the Moorpark area.

This Friday, the IVC athletics will be hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness event at the Lasers’ volleyball home match. The event will be called Dig Pink Volleyball Project.

The match starts at 6 p.m. against the Tigers of Riverside Community College.

Women’s soccer:

Last Tuesday, IVC earned the one bright spot in what would be a tough week for the Lasers.

IVC beat Golden West College 2-1. Arabia Ruiz got the Lasers on the board in the 14th minute with a left-footed one-timer into the net for the 1-0 lead. Golden West tied the match in the 42nd minute.

In the final minute of the first half, Monica Ramirez got the ball for the Lasers and split through two defenders and the goalie. Ramirez was alone and put the ball in for the 2-1 lead. IVC would fight off the Rustlers in the second half for the victory.

Several injuries would force the Lasers into a hole. Without the proper number of players, the Lasers were forced to forfeit last Friday’s road match against Riverside and Tuesday’s road match against Cypress.

The Lasers’ record stands at 3-6-0 overall and 1-2 in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Lasers hope to be full strength for their next match at home against Saddleback on Friday at 3 p.m.
