As a national holiday, Weed Day will bring peace and unity through a puff and a pass. (FLICKR/Cannabis Culture-Jeremiah Vandermeer. Used with a CC BY 2.0 license)

America, the land of the free, the fast paced and the constantly stressed.  This is why this country is in desperate need of a day of absolute mental, physical and emotional rest. In other words, America deserves at least one day out of the 365 to take a break and get baked without worries of school, work or life getting in the way.

Weed Day, also known as 4/20, is the date, that will hopefully soon see itself as a federally approved and nationally observed holiday in the states. One of these hopeful in this becoming a reality is Bill Maher.

Recently, Bill Maher addressed this concern by starting his own petition to help 4/20 become a nationally observed holiday.

“It’s more worthy than Columbus Day, why should we celebrate that racist psychopath,” Maher said. “We celebrate everything from Arbor Day to Groundhog Day to a National Day of Prayer. It’s high time we had a Weed Day. Because if we can set days aside to pay tribute to trees, a rodent or a space ghost, we can certainly designate one day to officially recognize a true American institution.”

Celebrations for 4/20 have already taken place in the past in areas such as San Francisco. Things that have gone down in San Francisco’s past only helps contribute to the cause though. For example, snack trash flooded the streets in the aftermath.

The city was left to clean up remains of Jack in the Box taco wrappings, pop tarts boxes, spray cheese cans and almost definitely lying around somewhere, some of Ben & Jerry’s “half baked”, which in no way describes the state of those who enjoyed that.

Sure, like anything else though, there are a few potential cons.

One con being that most likely most fast food stops would be out for the day. However, this immediately becomes a pro for those employees at least, who we all know to well, will most likely be celebrating the most.

Think about if fast food stops do stay open that day though. Customers would definitely need to prepare to stay in lines for hours or have their orders’ completely incorrect. In other words, there will totally be workplace accidents occurring, along with a high probability of car crashes throughout the day due to super inattentiveness

Aside from those small issues however, who does not want to participate in a day-long celebration of smoking a joint with a couple friends, a bunch of junk food, some interesting hallucinations and really good relaxing. America needs to come together and help make 4/20 a national holiday, a holiday where things will stand still, at least it most likely will for some.
