Saddleback hosts 11th Annual MSE Academic Triathlon

The 11th Annual Math, Science and Engineering Academic Triathlon will be hosted by Saddleback College on March 14.

The top scoring students will be awarded $3200 in scholarships.

“The event consists of a standardized test, with questions contributed by faculty members in our division on subjects ranging from mathematics, anatomy, general biology, computer science, geology, marine sciences and chemistry,” said Dr. Jane Horlings, the Biology professor at Saddleback organizing the event, in an email.

Horlings said that over the past 10 years almost $26,000 has been awarded to 84 students. This event serves as a means to promote sciences to the student body and reward those that have devoted time to these pursuits.

“We have chosen 250 questions to comprise the test. [Students] are not expected to have completed all of the classes in these subjects,” Horlings said. “It is similar to the standardized entrance exams they will encounter in the future, as it covers all of the sciences and math.”

To participate in the free exam, students need to show up to the event with a Saddleback student ID. Those who previously won $500 or more are not allowed to reenter.

The test will be given in the Science and Math Building, Room 104, from 2-5 p.m.
