Saddleback College announced on Thursday that it had been awarded a $2.75 million Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Program (TAACCCT) grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for the development of a new health care program.

According to the press release, 174 applications were submitted across the country. “Saddleback College was one of 23 single applicant colleges to be awarded a TAACCCT grant,” according to the release. A press release from the U.S. Department of Labor said that the total amount of money given to the 23 single applicant colleges totaled almost $62 million.

The grant will be used by the college’s division of Health Sciences and Human Services to start the Orange County Health Care Career Transitions Fast Track to Success program. The release describes the program as, “…a program to prepare current Saddleback students, unemployed workers, and displaced workers affected by foreign trade for high-demand allied health careers.” The program will also be open to already existing allied health workers to train them in new career fields made possible through the federal Affordable Care Act.

The release says that although the program will be started at Saddleback, it will eventually be partly based out of the proposed Center for Innovation in Health Care Education at the Advanced Technology and Education Park (ATEP)
