Saddleback College’s Associated Student Government is sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday, Feb. 24 and Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student Services Center, Room 212.

Last year, the ASG had 181 donors, and hope to surpass that number this year.

“What I like about this school,” said Rory Lusic, 21, criminal justice, “is the students’ willingness to donate.”

Lusic is in charge of the ASG blood drive committee, along with Krystle Salazar, 20, psychology.

According to the American Red Cross Web site, an American needs a pint of blood every two seconds, yet only five percent of eligible donors in the United States give blood every year.

“One pint of blood can save up to three lives,” said Salazar.

The whole process takes about an hour, although the actual donation only takes about 10 minutes. Aside from a tiny prick, there is no discomfort associated with giving blood. As an added bonus, free refreshments are offered for those who donate.

“We will have pancakes in the morning, and cookies, juice, and chips and salsa throughout the day,” said Salazar. “We’ll also have gift certificates to Cherry on Top frozen yogurt store.”

“Aside from the snacks,” said Lusic, “At at least three instructors are offering extra credit for blood donations.”

Walk-ins are accepted, but students may opt to schedule an appointment to give blood by visiting the ASG office. People who have already signed up to donate are encouraged to be as punctual as possible as late appointments will be put at the back of the walk-in line.
