Lariat scores eight awards at JACC

Lariat Staff

The Lariat staff from Saddleback College brought home eight awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ SoCal Conference held last weekend at Cal State Fullerton.

There were numerous seminars during the conference, ranging from sports photography tips, broadcasting, as well as journalism internships. Competitions were also a mainstay in the conference with over 20 community colleges participating. From categories such as opinion writing to page layout, many of the students had to complete on-the-spot entries before an appointed deadline.

Four students received awards for on-site competitions. Kylie Corbett was given honorable mention for her entry in the news photo category. Matt Garvey received second place for his entry in the sports writing category. Julie Tran received two honorable mentions for her entries in the copyediting and editorial cartoon categories.

Photo editor Sean Lara took three awards for his photography entries. He received fourth place for the news photo category, second place in the sports photo category, and an honorable mention for a photo in the bring-in category.

Former Lariat staff member Lee Eisler received an honorable mention for a feature story written last semester. His submission was mailed in to the judges for review before the conference as part of the write-it categories.
