Academic Senate pushes for the AVID for Higher Education Program

Implementation of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Saddleback College will be discussed and voted on by Academic Senate members within the next two weeks.

The program would focus on improving learning in areas of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading for 100 economically disadvantaged students. AVID would assist these students by providing faculty training and support.

“What we give AVID is a campus to do their research and to prove the effectiveness of their college program which is 5 years old. It has a substantial presence in places like Texas and in some California CSU’s already,” said President Elect, Dr. Bruce Gilman.”It’s a program which has existed in high schools for almost 30 years and has established quite a good reputation.”

“There’s a myriad of questions,” says Senate member Jeanne Smith from the math department. “You’ve got 100 students and you’re going to sprinkle them how throughout the courses? How much money this is going to actually cost and who’s going to pay it?”

Further discussion regarding the AVID for Higher Education Program will be Tuesday, Sept. 3 from 1 p.m.- 3 p.m. in room AGB 106.
