Labor Day activities planned throughout Orange County

Elizabeth Ortiz

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers, according to the U.S. Dept. of Labor.

It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Here are some ways surrounding cities in Orange County will celebrate.
  • Flights & Sounds Over Labor Day Weekend – The Orange County Great Park’s summer concert series continues over the holiday weekend with Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums with Miss Carmen Getit on Sept. 3 and Scrap Arts Music on Sept. 4. Both shows begin at 8 p.m. and admission is free. $10 parking. Orange County Great Park, 6950 Marine Way, Irvine. 866-829-3829.
  •  Labor Day Concert in the Park – Celebrate Labor Day with the Tijuana Dogs and the Dave Silver Band. The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group will be selling food and drinks to raise funds for the Marines abroad. 1-4:30 p.m. Free admission. Lantern Bay Park, 25111 Park Lantern Road, Dana Point. 949-248-3530.
  •  Labor Day Celebration at the Santa Ana Zoo – Celebrate Labor Day this year at the Santa Ana Zoo with special guests Jerry Brown, Democratic nominee for Governor of California, CA Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez and Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. In honor of the working families of Orange County, the festivities will include free admission to the zoo as well as various fun and games for the entire family. 11 a.m. Sept. 4. Santa Ana Zoo, 1801 E. Chestnut Ave., Santa Ana. 714-385-1534.
DUI checkpoints are scheduled this weekend in several counties. Drinking and driving is a major risk and getting caught is a high price to pay.
