This past Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Student Development staff held a Halloween costume contest in the Student Services Quad at Saddleback College. The idea was to get students in the holiday spirit and have fun.

The staff was giving away Papa John’s pizza to anyone wearing a costume or that have an ASG sticker on their student ID. They were also giving away a variety of candy, welcome to all students.

The participants started signing up at noon and were able to enter the contest until 2 p.m. The Quad was full of people, but not everyone was in costume. However, those that did, made the contest more exciting.

The costumes ranged from something simple like a T-shirt and a wig, to head to toe costumes. Part of celebrating Halloween is dressing up and depending on the person, the goal every year is to choose your costume with a certain style in mind. Fortunately, there was a lot of different styles signing-up for the contest and the choices made it difficult for the student development staff to choose the winners.

“It was hard to choose the winners,” said student development staff, Arsham Mahrami, 18. “Because they were equally good.”

Two Knott’s Scary Farm tickets for first place winner, Mark Horan, 21, who was wearing a well portrayed costume of “Arrow.” Two movie tickets to the second place winner, Natalie Chehayeb, 19. She had on a feminine Captain America costume with the mask and all the details. Kenneth Phuong, 28, won one movie ticket as third place in his Slender Man costume from his favorite video game.

According to CNN, 64 percent of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween this year. 41.2 million Americans ages 5-14 are potential trick-or-treaters. On candy, costumes and decorations, the average American will spend $74.34. That’s $6.9 billion total Halloween consumer spending in the United States for 2015.
