Now that fall is in our rearview mirror and the weather begins to warm, we say goodbye to heavy sweaters and scarves and say hello to bright colors and fun patterns.

Even though March has barely begun, it seems every clothing, make-up and fashion company has already launched their spring 2013 lines, and the Saddleback community is in on the trends.

Jillian Jackson, 20, business marketing/fashion merchandising said that for spring she’s most excited for the skater dresses and pleated skirts.

“I tend to lean toward the more ‘classy’ or ‘girly’ styles as opposed to edgy or tough,” Jackson said. “A phrase to describe my personal style would have to be classic revolution.”

Jackson said she’s noticed how the music, movie and fashion industry tend to work together.

“During the year, when everyone is watching TV shows like Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries, girls are all about those short mini dresses,” Jackson said. “Then around April, when Coachella is happening, everyone wants lace and feathers to pretend they’re at Woodstock.”

According to the March 2013 issue of People StyleWatch, ruffles, sheer fabric, black and white patterns and pointy flats will be must-have trends this season that any girl can add to her closet.

As new trends emerge each season, old styles make a comeback. This spring the 90s seems to be back in style.

“It seems like the early 90s are back right now with boots that look like the old Doc Martins, denim jackets, spike details and bangs added to haircuts,” Malia Vago, fashion instructor said.

Jackson said she also sees 90s looks popping up, but with a “new pastel princess-y, but somewhat futuristic space twist.”

Spring is known for its pop of color and this year is no different. People StyleWatch shows pastels and bright colors working their way into wardrobes this spring.

“Bright colors seem to be making a resurgence,” Vago said. “It will be in everything from bold print dresses to neon skinny jeans.”

Girls aren’t the only ones looking forward to the new styles appearing this spring. There are many new looks that guys are trying out as well.

For men, looks with primary colors and military jackets are in for spring according to Men’s Health magazine.

“I’ve seen the camo trend coming in hot,” Kevin Reyes, 24, said. “Everything from jackets to women’s tights.”

Reyes said he goes for a musician’s style and usually shops at stores like H&M and Zara. He feels that the more sophisticated, dapper style is in right now, like Don Draper from Mad Men.

Men will be going for slimmer clothes and low-cropped jeans, Reyes predicted.

“Guys are looking for something different and unique,” Jefferson Johnson, 26 said.

Reyes agreed, “The uncool is cool.”

New male trends aren’t just with clothes this year, but hair as well. Vago said on campus she’s noticed a lot more guys growing out facial hair and Ray Ban sunglasses are still in style.
