Bringing fashion awareness

What do a live DJ, boutique vendors, good eats, and a jersey shore look-a-like contest have in common? The Saddleback College special events class will be presenting Urban Fusion, which will be an event in which all those and more will be included.

Comedian Robert Stubby will be hosting the event on Nov. 18 at 10a.m. to 2p.m. in the SSC (student services center) quad where there will be artists and designers selling and promoting their work as well as other activities to engage the college students.

The culinary arts department will be having a chili cook off. Plus, Gracie Barra, a 24-hour fitness instructor, will be demonstrating different types of Jiu-Jitsu exercises.

“We have had events in the pasted which were called fashion awareness day, but we kind of took a spin on that,” director, Talia Samuels, 18, communication, said. “We changed the name, the concept, and added a lot of more things. We are going to go all out this year.”

The clothing designers will display a fashion show where models will be showcasing their designs. The Lake Forest Beauty School will be doing the models’ make-up and hair for the show, which will be the main event of the day.

Twenty-seven vendors, eight of which are Saddleback students, will be included such as big names Element and RVCA, but many more are coming in each day to get their spot in the quad, Samuels said.

If the vendor makes more than $30 to $50 then ten percent of the proceeds will be going to the Saddleback foundation that will give a fashion student a scholarship.

The event will not only be a great way to promote one’s work but it will also benefit the fashion students, Samuels said.

The main goal of the event, Samuels said, is to have awareness and they would really like many people to come out. It will be a fun event, but the class needs to simply get the word out to students and interested people in the community.

In addition to the excitement of the event it would be a great way to raise money to help out those students in the fashion department, director, Stella Amirkhanian, 46, Fashion Merchandising, said.
