ASG and Vets Center get ready to ‘Dance Against Cancer’

The Student Development Office at Saddleback College will be hosting their inaugural “Dance Against Cancer” event in the college’s gymnasium on Friday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event will feature two charities: the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Be The Match. Contestants will choose one charity and dance to raise money for cancer research.

“So far, we’ve raised $13,929 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation that benefits research for childhood cancer,” said ASG Director of Events Shayan Akhavan. “It’s a cool event because there’s student involvement for a good cause.”

Cancer kills more children in the U.S. than any other illness or disease, according to the Student Development webpage.

Many members of the Veterans Student Council are also participating in the event.

“I think this is a great thing for the community for students to participate in,” said Veterans Student Council Officer of Finance Camran Sadaghiani. “ASG is very involved and dedicated to this cause.”

Participants form teams of at least two people before naming their team and choosing a charity. Afterwards, each team solicits sponsorships from donors. Finally, they’ll practice their dance moves and then start dancing when the event begins. At least one participant from each team must be on the dance floor at all times.

Some members of the Veterans Student Council have formed their own team and are planning on dancing for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

“The veterans are proud to support the fight against cancer,” said Veterans Student Council Director Chris Merkle. “We’ve formed our own St. Baldricks team and we look forward to working in future events.”
